It means different things.  

Are you being ranked by your performance?

People have accountability on each separate part of their performance.  Ranked high here, ranked low there, etc...

There should be a book for creative versions of hourglasses.  Whether it be purely in art, or up for sale as real decorations.  A modernized and more complex version, perhaps.  Even, educational models.
